Business Students Prove Their Stuff with High Score in CompetitionFrom The Daily News - Kamloops, British Columbia. by Marnie Douglas A group of UCC business students has hit the jackpot -- at least a simulated one. A class of fourth-year marketing students recently participated in an eight-week global marketplace competition, using a computer simulation program from the University of Tennessee. The University College of the Cariboo team competed against students from other universities, including the University of Wisconsin, a college in Poland, University of Tennessee and two business schools in Spain. The UCC team, named Gladiator Computers Inc., earned one of the highest scores in the contest's 10-year history. The team of students included Dino Bernardo, Ryan Dale-Johnson, Clint Kronebusch, Gentry Stickel and Royce Welch. Each team designed and launched a number of new products, raising money and negotiating with banks. Gladiator Computers amassed nearly $100 million from an initial $4-million investment. ``In the 10 years I've seen this contest going, I've never seen results like this. It's been really amazing,'' said marketing Prof. Ken Blawatt. The score is based on market share, profits, investment in the future and an effective marketing strategy. The average score is 700 points, but UCC's team scored more than 7,000 points. ``They just hammered the marketplace. It's good, hands-on training because it allows the students to apply what they've learned,'' Blawatt said. Dale-Johnson said he hopes to apply experience from the game to his own business. ``It taught me how to do everything behind the scenes. It was really helpful, yes,'' he said Tuesday. Dale-Johnson, 23, recently started his own clothing business, 748 Clothing. He admits his fashion knowledge is keen but, prior to taking the class, his business acumen needed work.
