A: In order for the software to function properly, the decision files of all participants have to be transferred and aggregated in one location (the Marketplace processing center) for processing. Once decision files are processed, players will be able transfer results back to their master computer from the Internet. As you can see, the ability to transfer files successfully to and from team computers is crucial.

There are two ways files can be transferred from your computer to the Marketplace processing center: through a hardwired connection or by dial-up modem service.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) that is the protocol that is used to transfer data to and from the Marketplace processing center. FTP is a standard protocol used for data transfers over the Internet and a standard part of Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT.

Q: Can Marketplace 5 file transfer utility transfer data through a firewall?

A: It depends on how the firewall is setup. In the most restricted environments the firewall does not allow any FTP transfer through it. In less restricted environments the firewall can be setup so that Marketplace file transfer utility can work.

The FTP client, which is a part of the Marketplace transfer utility, is setup as a passive FTP client to enable it to work better with firewalls. Please read more in-depth explanation here.
