77,000 Marketplace Users and Counting
Since our inception in 2001, more than 77,000 people have participated in our simulations. Our product line now spans 18 simulations.
Marketplace Around the World
Marketplace’s popularity has been greatly aided by the efforts of our partners to translate various games into their language. Take a look at the games that are now available in Spanish, Chinese, Polish and Portuguese.
Marketplace in Lithuania
Bonita Barger from Tennessee Technology University spent last fall in Vilnius, Lithuania where she introduced Marketplace to 110 business students in the International School of Management. Bonita chose the Introduction to Business and Strategy simulation to help the students understand business ethics. This was the Lithuanian students’ first academic simulation.
Marketplace in Gaza
The headlines read, Groundbreaking Program Brings Gazan Youth from Unemployment to First Paycheck. Marketplace was there.
Marketplace in China
Gilbert Yu, our partner in China, has launched a very impressive All China Competition.
In Phase 1, fifteen hundred students (five hundred teams) played against the computer in the Introduction to Marketing game. The best 25 teams have now progressed into Phase 2 and are playing against each other in 5 Venture Strategy games. The winner of each game will progress into Phase 3 where they will compete against each other in the Integrated Business Management game.
Simon Graduate School of Business Competition, University of Rochester
The Simon Graduate School of Business is in its second year of a very innovative competition designed to recruit the best students to its graduate program. The winner of the competition will receive a full scholarship to the Simon School valued at over $70,000. Several partial scholarships ranging from 25% to 75% will also be awarded.
Santander Bank Competition Helps to Screen Job Applicants in Brazil
Santander Banespa used Marketplace to help screen applicants for a position at the bank. To find the most qualified candidates, it had them compete in a one-week Venture Strategy simulation. The best candidates will earn a position as a banker in the wholesale area of international banking.
The 24th Marketplace Global Competition - February 2007
Looking for some additional excitement for your class? Think about joining the next Marketplace Global Competition. With a mixture of college teams from around the world, the participants gain insight into the ways of thinking and business strategies of other cultures. And, it is just more fun to compete on an international scale.
The Competition of Experienced Players - February 2007

Do you have students who would like to play Marketplace again? Would they like to take it to a higher level? How about playing against other experienced players?
For the ultimate in business competition, have your gung-ho students join the Competition for Experienced Players.
New & Improved Simulations
We continue to grow our simulation offerings with two new simulations. We have also improved one of our popular levels by adding new regional options. We are sure these new and improved simulations will be of interest to ILS customers.
- Supply Chain & Channel Management (beta)
- Integrated Business Management (new regional options available)
- Global Business Game
Preparing Our Services For the Future
When we started in 2000, we had one small server which provided Web Marketplace to our customers. Over the years, our business has grown and we have been busy adding servers. Now we have 8 servers at our web hosting company.
Train The Trainers Workshop
Want a quick course on how to get the most out of Marketplace? Sign up for our next Train The Trainers Workshop. It is FREE.
The focus of the workshop is on hands-on learning for faculty and trainers. You will participate in a midlevel Marketplace simulation and experience everything that your students experience. And, at strategic times, we will depart from the student format and discuss best practices and how to get the most out of the Web Instructor.
Need a Textbook for Marketplace?
The Management of Strategy in the Marketplace textbook by Cadotte & Bruce (2003) can be a very valuable addition to your course.
This textbook was designed to complement the high level Marketplace simulations. Each chapter addresses key management issues that are also reflected in the simulation.
While the textbook is ideally suited for high level Marketplace simulations, there are many chapters that might be of interest to faculty that teach marketing strategy, new ventures, and strategy courses. Fortunately, the publisher, Thomson Learning, now allows you can pick out those chapters which are most applicable to your class and Thomson Learning will prepare a customized book just for you.
Instructor Tips
In our efforts to make life easier for faculty, we have continued to improve the game management features with the Web Instructor. There are two that tend to be very important during the early part of many games - the ability to modify the schedule and the ability to move players from one team or game to another. Here are descriptions of how to execute each of these activities.
